Homework
Expectations
Each child will be asked to complete weekly homework. The homework is assigned on Monday and returned on Friday. Each family can decide how best to complete the homework throughout the week.
Math Homework
Each child will bring home a math homework book. This book is to stay at home in a safe place! Each week I will post the assigned pages under Homework. They should be completed, ripped out of the book, and sent into school on Friday in your child's take home folder.
Fluency Homework
A fluency page will be sent home with your child every Monday. This page is to be completed and returned on Friday. The pages are meant to increase various comprehension skills and increase in difficulty as the year progresses.
Spelling Homework
As part of our "Hunk and Chunk" phonics program, a weekly list of spelling words will be sent home for your child to practice. These words correspond to the phonics skills we are studying in class. There is no homework to turn in, and it is up to you and your child how these words are practiced. However, there will be a test given on Fridays. There will be a laminated spelling "menu" coming home the first week of homework. These are just suggestions on ways your child can practice their spelling words at home.
Reading Homework
While there is no formal assignment for reading, it is expected that each child will spend at least 10 minutes nightly reading to themselves or someone else. This is an excellent way to practice fluency, build comprehension, and develop a love of reading!
If you are having a difficult time finding books at your child's level please check out the first grade book list from our media center. You can also find books based on your child's reading level.
